Chantelle Summer - Interior Decoration Essentials 101 (Accelerator)

"I loved everything about the course. I am a person who needs to bounce my ideas of people, and I am inspired by other people’s passion and ideas too. Meeting like minded people from around the country was a big . The course also has a range of very diverse lecturers who all have different styles and ways of doing things."

Why did you choose the Uocmas Design School?

I chose the Uocmas course after speaking with a graduate, and successful interior designer Lisa Ewart from Collected interiors. I have a career as a TV reporter here in Perth, and I was unable to commit to a 6 or 12 month interior design course here. The fact that I could fly to Sydney, and spend a week immersing myself in the course, away from the distractions of work and home life, was a big attraction.

What did you get out of the course?

I loved everything about the course. I am a person who needs to bounce my ideas of people, and I am inspired by other people’s passion and ideas too. Meeting like minded people from around the country was a big . The course also has a range of very diverse lecturers who all have different styles and ways of doing things. One of my downfalls was that I had lots of wonderful ideas, but I found it hard to choose just a few. The course taught me how to organise those ideas and make better, more informed decisions.

Tell us a little about you.

I have 3 children, a girl and two boys. When I was in high school I had two career choices. 1. A TV reporter 2. An Interior designer. I’m finally getting to do both! My husband and i started renovating houses when we first moved in together 14 years ago. He is an engineer, and very handy. We built a beach house in WA’s southwest and now rent it out for holidays too. I did the entire interior for that and loved it. We have just finished our “forever “ home in the hills here in Perth. We owner built it and it has been 2 years of very hard work, but it is the most beautiful home I have ever seen!

What inspires/excites you in the interiors industry?

I am very much drawn to sustainable designs. Raw, earthy materials and functional design. Social media like and Instagram are endless sources of inspiration! I also love a pop of colour to add some joy into a room. I also get a lot of inspiration from cafes and restaurants. I think I own about one thousand home magazines too.

How would you describe your personal style?

Modern rustic with a pop of colour. Lots of earthy textures, raw materials like wood and concrete. Everything has to be functional, beautiful and easy to maintain. For example, my ensuite ( pictured) has luscious concrete floors throughout and no shower screens. It is a breeze to clean and I love the feeling of the concrete underfoot. My kitchen island bench is made from 100 year old Karri beams salvaged from the old Fremantle wool stores. It is very sturdy, feels beautiful and has a lovely history.

Your latest project?

We just moved into our “treehouse” a few weeks ago. My husband and his father have built much of it with their own hands. It was designed by an eco-friendly building designer and we are literally in the treetops. It has recycled brick spine walls, burnished concrete floors, louvre windows for cross ventilation, and our infinity edge pool acts as an evaporative air conditioner. The bottom storey is half underground and hidden from the street. We do not have any air-conditioning either which is a first for me! I have kept the interiors earthy with lots of texture in the building materials. It is a beautiful home to live in.

What’s next?

My husband, who is currently project managing a big commercial project in the city, has got his building licence. We plan to start a home building company in the near future. Watch this space!
