On Trend: Wild Wallpaper

Wallpaper has become a staple in the contemporary and traditional Australian home.

From a design perspective, wallpaper provides instant gratification. A brilliant update for a room that needs a touch of personality or a wall that otherwise might have been a vast, plain space.

Wallpaper has always been used by interior designers.  From textured papers like silks, linens, grass cloths, strings rattan and actual impressed leaves, to using bright prints. In projects from boutique hotels, new restaurants to grand master bedrooms.

Whilst it’s always been around, we’re seeing a resurgence in bold, dramatic prints and patterns this year. 2016 line is a beautiful example. Striking features and contrasting palettes create interest in the home. similarly has a collection featuring deep colours and patterns.

You can also design your own and a number of suppliers have the function to create bespoke and tailored designs. You can pick the pattern, scale it and colour it to suit your scheme. Though local and international textile houses have something for every aesthetic.

I love the introduction of pattern in bathrooms or a statement in a minimalist living space. Navy and white works wonders in a traditional scheme. Metallics had elegant glamour and monochrome designs enhance a contemporary aesthetic.

I also love the instant glamour of a silk paper in a moody or pastel tone or whimsy designs with their leather looks, tribal prints and gentle, elegant feather designs.

Playing with design, texture and images is great fun and such a simple way to transform a space.
