Through The Looking Glass

An idealistic haven where the outdoors are separated from their interior by nothing but a breath of clear glass – it's a design concept that has been on my mind recently.  Nothing is as inspiring as architectural design that delicately balances a building’s exterior surroundings with a functional interior space.

When done successfully, greenhouse inspired design can overwhelm the senses and capture the imagination.

One of the most mesmerising projects I have stumbled across recently is the Scandinavian Kekkilä modular garden shed, by Avanto Architects. While ideal for small-scale greenhouse cultivation, Ville Hara designer Linda Bergroth saw so much potential in this design that she constructed the modular shed on her property (at the edge of a remote Finnish Island no less) as her very own summer escape.

Fully equipped with temperature control, new wooden floor boards, and solar charged lighting, Bergroth’s unique pre-fab is her very own quiet place of solitude to while away the summer months.

The Kekkila modular sheds can be purchased in Scandinavia and can be put together with a screw driver. It is truly greenhouse inspired living at it’s most extreme and inspiring!

To kick start your imagination, below are some more beautifully inspired glass houses – where entire walls and ceilings have been knocked out to embrace the building’s natural surroundings.
