Compared to Melbourne, the Sydney CBD can lack a bit of personality. But that’s all changing with many new restaurants and bars that have been opening up over the past year. One of the best of them is the newly opened Morrison at the foot of Grosvenor Place.
Owned by experienced bar tsar Fraser Short, with a fit out by one of the best niche architecture firms in Australia – – the team have crafted a high street bar and restaurant that reminds you of old town New York.
“This is a space where one can get lost in the play of handmade food, handmade furniture and the theatre of the CBD” says Jeremy Bull, Director Akin Creative.
The glassy corner frontage of the site frames the grungy streetscape perfectly enabling you to get lost in the millions of forgotten memories of the old rocks precinct and the fantasy of the CBD.
The Oyster room and restaurant draws from the historical vernacular of the old building and its industrial roots – raw steel, concrete and masonry are cut back, whilst the layers of paint, render and old timber panel work give nod to its days as the retailer of ‘Brooklyn Overalls’.
My favourite features are the canvas rope bench seat upholstery, belt pull detailing and the black tap’s in the men’s toilets.
Whether it’s post work drinks or a big dinner out with friends on the weekend, the Morrison is exactly why the CBD is getting cooler.
