The Smallest Sanctuary; Landscape Design for Courtyards

Designing gardens for tight spaces can be tricky, especially when we live so much outdoors. Inner city gardens are often only a few metres wide, with everyone wanting to fit in seating, a bbq and feature plants.

The key is scale and layout. Try using perimeter seating, which can act of both lounge and dining chair. Incorporate furniture with fine legs, that isn’t too bulky and intruding. White accents can also help the space feel bigger. The use of up-lighting and mirrors can also give the illusion of space, playing with height and scale, and can give the space a focal point. Symmetrical plantings, create a seamless and refined look, whist clusters of plants in different varieties can create a more eclectic, textural garden.
