Reinventing the Kitchen

Kitchens are no longer a stock standard feature in today’s homes. No longer confined to a separate room off a living or dining space. No longer for the sole purpose of cooking. With the era of open plan comes a revitalised focus for the kitchen. It has become a design feature, a casual dining space and a place where people congregate. The kitchen has become the centre of attention.

Think striking island benches that double up as beautiful console tables, warm and inviting finishes and kitchen appliances concealed behind stunning custom joinery.

In Australia, we’re privileged to have a talented interior design community and I’m constantly inspired by the beautiful works of our very best. One of those is Greg Natale – admired for his refined, tailored and elegant approach.

Tierney Watson House is one of his latest projects in the beautiful Sydney waterside suburb of Balmain. It’s doesn’t disappoint on the kitchen and the space echoes the fact that kitchen design has been reinvented in recent years.

The sleek dark chocolate cabinetry and oversized round Antique Satin Brass hardware by Designer Doorware envelopes the dining area and the kitchen, creating an overall cohesive space. The kitchen’s island bench, which looks more like a gorgeous bespoke console, balances atop timber legs with delicate metallic ferrules, tying back to the beautiful metallic details featured throughout the glamorous ‘Palm Springs Regency’ styled home. You’ll see no gleaming and overbearing down lights; instead, a gorgeous metallic pendant light with fabric shade hangs low above the bench.

Another exceptional example of an integrated kitchen experience is seen in Greg’s very own Darlinghurst apartment, where the kitchen seamlessly shares the same space as the colourful yet sophisticated living area. Clever use of mirror reflects the colour and view from the living space, which introduces more light above the kitchen’s dark floating bench. The bench stretches out from one end of the apartment to the other, exaggerating the width of the apartment to suggest a larger and more open space. The black and white geometric carpet from the living room extends on an angle through to one half of the kitchen bench, which is then mirrored by luxurious granite that extends from the other half of the kitchen floor through to the backsplash. This practical area features a sleek oven and stove top, with a narrow circular floating range hood hovering above.

It’s clear to see that Greg Natale’s kitchen designs are truly an extension of the architecture and design details featured in each unique home. So use these examples as inspiration to create not only a glamorous kitchen, but also one that stays true to the rest of your home.
