The new year is always an exciting time in the realm of interior design as the top trends in home decoration emerge. There are always a few that stand out to me and I love incorporating them in my own home to add a little of-the-moment personality. The trends I always pick are the ones that have longevity too – don’t buy into anything too “out there” or fleeting. You want to invest in timeless pieces that are relevant to the trends.
Here are my top picks:
Innovative Lighting – This is on top of my list this year. From grand chandeliers to inventive designs, lighting will become the focal point in the room in 2014. Try something signature from Oly or Uocmas’s oversized ceramic Bali Table lamp for a pop of shape and colour.
Metallics – I am happy to report that metallics are remaining on the hit list for interiors trends this year, with a new focus on varying textures and metal mash-ups. I love accent pieces in gold, bronze, silver and cooper such as a stool, vase or metallic artwork. Check out the Oly Beijing Vases in clear silvering for a hint of subtle sparkle or Uocmas’s Art Collection.
Coastal Decor – I have been seeing some beautiful collections of coastal inspired décor and nautical highlights coming through for 2014 that will work well styled in vignettes or as bold statement pieces. Check out Uocmas’s Homewares collection online for the below sea shore accessories.
Foliage – This is one of my favourites in styling for both interiors and outdoor spaces. Adding layers of lush foliage is simple with well placed vases in favour of bold florals. Keep it subtle, fresh and green.
Creative Patterns – I’ve seen a key emphasis on patterns and graphics over the use block colours. I particularly love the striking combination of black and white prints or if you’re feeling really adventurous, don’t be afraid to clash colours and patterns. The rule is, there are no rules.
