Uocmas Interior Design was commissioned to provide a full scope interior design service for , a new 17 story multi-residential development by located in Redfern within Sydney’s inner city fringe. Designers produced a premium fit out for each of the luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments, drawing on the urban surroundings for a high end, contemporary feel. The kitchen and bathroom design schemes offer carefully selected finishes and fixtures in a considered layout, practical for versatile apartment living and use of space. Additionally, Uocmas Interior Design created an urban yet beautiful display suite and cafe space to launch the new development.

Uocmas Interior Design, comments on the inspiration and design processes behind 88onRegent.
How do you approach a project of this nature?
We always commence with looking at where the development is situated. We draw inspiration from the site and its surroundings, the people, the culture, the architecture and the materiality that surrounds the site. We then develop our own interpretation of ‘the spirit’ of the site and this forms a strong basis for our design concept, which we refer back to often as a grounding tool throughout all of the design stages. Once we have a true understanding of the site, we then look at materiality, textures and colours that are suitable for the project. In most cases, we are inspired by the proposed architecture of the new building. We draw on the external façade for example and establish a direct or sometimes purposefully indirect connection to the interiors. At the same time, we analayse the floors plans that have been provided to us by the Architect and we work to ensure that each floor plan of each apartment type is practical, efficient and resolved. Once the floor plans are right, we then continue to build on them by elevating certain areas (kitchens, bathroom and any other custom joinery) and developing the designs for each area. We specify materials, appliances and specialty storage components, fittings and fixtures, tapware and hardware and schedule all items for procurement. We finally arrive at the end with complete construction documentation which equips the developer/builder with all of the information required to build the internal elemnets of the apartments.
What is the aesthetic for 88onRegent?
Urban, layered, textured, contemporary and raw with a hint of luxury. It is important that the interiors of each apartment feel like they belong in Redfern.
What are the design elements for the kitchen?
There is never enough storage in apartments and maximising storage was a goal that we set out to achieve when designing the kitchen. We also aimed at designing a fully functional kitchen which included a full-height integrated fridge, 4-burner cooktop with oven and ducted rangehood, integrated dishwasher, full-height pull-out pantry, appliance cupboard with an integrated microwave, pot drawers and cutlery drawers and overhead cupboards that finish at the ceiling. The inclusion of the bespoke dining table setting within the kitchen was a unique element that we introduced to apartment living. It is space saving and multi-functional and has been a popular element that purchasers keep raving about. The other bespoke element that was custom made for this development and has proven to be well received is the steel framed, glass overhead cupboards which many people adore because it enables them to personalise their kitchen with fine china, crockery and accessories.
And the bathroom?
We selected a generous wall hung basin with feature black tapware, a simple toilet pan with a concealed cistern and black designer buttons and a lavish black shower rose paired with a hand-held shower as a feature fitting. The storage was custom designed and hidden away in the wall behind the vanity mirror and the feature light fitting sits proudly above it for a luxurious touch. The shower screen in its panelled appearance provide a layer of detail that is unexpected and makes this development stand out from others. Finally, the herringbone, marble, mosaic feature wall brings texture and indulgence to the bathroom. The end result is a contemporary and strikingly beautiful bathroom design that resonates perfectly with the target market for the apartments.
What influenced your selections for the fixtures and finishes throughout the apartments?
This is a quality development where each apartment was priced upwards of $1 million and price was a large consideration when choosing the right brands and materials to ensure perceived value by the purchaser. We specified brands like Miele and
Astra Walker, bespoke handles from Mademeasure
and introduced some custom elements such as the steel framed glass, overhead cupboards and an oak timber dining table with brass edging. We specified herringbone timber flooring which is normally not possible on projects of this scale due to the excessive labour costs associated with this flooring.
What does 88onRegent offer to new home buyers and investors alike?
The development has a unique offering for both owner occupiers and investors and it was an exciting project to work on for Uocmas Interior Design. The apartments themselves are a beautiful sanctuary with high end finishes and fittings that will age gracefully and never date. The open plan concept offers plenty of room for growing families whilst large outdoor balconies with city views are ideal for entertaining all year round. Lavish kitchen and bathrooms with plenty of storage and bespoke detailing have that awe factor which is rare in a new development and storage is maximised throughout the apartment with self-contained laundries and linen cupboards. An abundance of full-height glazing off living areas and master bedrooms ensures light-filled, open apartment living.
