Globally renowned for a world class arts scene and vibrant nightlife, Amsterdam is a city where history meets urban modernity.
Nothing speaks of this more than the series of five independent canal houses at Herengracht 255, which now play host to – a new ultra-cool hotel whose interior, while both chic and slightly eclectic, complement the historic buildings that date all the way back to the 1800’s.
The handsome red-brick façade of the original buildings by Dutch architect W.J.M Poggenbeek, is a great indication as to the elegance and warmth that lays behind those walls.
Interior design power couple Joyce Urbanus and Dax Roll of local-based studio , are the masterminds behind the cosy interior that balances the buildings’ original glory with modern sensibilities.
You’ll find autumnal hues carry on from the lobby’s communal spaces right through to each of the 111 guest room. Tans, blues, golds and reds feature throughout to create a warm and inviting ambience that is often associated with boutique hotels – although The Huxton technically isn’t a boutique hotel.
A more contemporary vibe plays out in the ‘Shoebox’ (single), ‘Cosy’ (double), and ‘Roomy (deluxe) rooms. Block colours of delft blue, petrol, light sage and taupe feature against the heritage features of dark parquetry timber flooring and wood panelled walls. In the ‘Concept’ rooms you’ll find a beautifully restored golden ceiling, as well as more of an ornate and traditional colour palette involving gold leaf walls and warm off-whites – paying homage to the 17th century Mayor who resided in the building. Despite the overall classic beauty of the ‘Concept’ rooms, modern fittings and furniture feature throughout to create a point of difference.
The lobby’s laid-back living room aesthetic is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the tree-lined streets, its cool appeal extending to a restaurant and bar to be enjoyed all day, and night, by guests and locals alike.
I couldn’t resist a visit on my way home from London recently and I thoroughly recommend the experience.
