How To: Mix & Match

A little bit of versatility never hurt anyone, especially when it comes to interior design. A home that has layers of different styles, colours, patterns, and textures is interesting and charismatic; however, achieving this look can be quite difficult to the untrained eye. To help with this, I’ve come up with tips for the two most popular subjects when it comes to mixing and matching within the home.

Timber Finishes

There are many quirky and cool multi-tonal timber pieces, quite like the Museum Dining Table by Timothy Oulton, which you can use in your home as an anchoring point. Just select complementary furniture that refers to one of the many colours featured for a cohesive interior.

Just like you would with paint colour, look for similarities in the tones of the timber – are they warm or cool? If you play with varied shades within these undertones then you cannot go wrong! However, if you’ve been blessed with certain coloured timber flooring, but have your eyes on a different toned dining table, for example, then why not break up the two with a beautiful rug? The rug acts as a visual barrier, allowing for a more subtle transition between the two coloured timbers – a patterned rug like the Old Grand Library by Timothy Oulton will do the space justice.

Furniture Styles

What I love about interior design is that you no longer have to create a matchy-matchy setting within your home – just keep in mind that scale, balance, and harmony are important factors when it comes to pulling off mixed furniture styles.

One of the more fun spaces to experiment a mixed furniture style is the dining room. Keep the chairs in the same scale; pair a ghost chair with a traditional timber chair, ensuring that the seats are of an equal or similar height, and that the tops of the chairs are in line. If you have two larger chairs amongst a more delicate set, place the larger pieces at the opposite ends of the table to create symmetry, and balance out the setting.

Balance plays a huge role when it comes to mixing and matching bedside tables. Find pieces that have a similar visual weight, meaning to select side tables that attract the eye in an equal amount – look for similar colours, tones, and shapes.

When playing with different styles within the living room, choose a specific colour palette to create harmony between the different pieces. Feel free to pair two Louis chairs with a traditional English Chesterfield sofa, keeping in mind to use a similar shade to create visual flow.
