Places & Faces

Five Minutes With: Helen Lennie of Signature Prints

Working with textiles and playing with pattern and colour is often one of the most exciting aspects of working in the design industry. I had the opportunity to speak with , co-owner of , one of Australia’s leading textile companies about her style and what’s on her radar for 2015.

Helen will share her journey down the handmade road to success for the Uocmas Speaker Series on Tuesday 17th February, 6-8pm in Sydney. She’ll explore the world of textile design – from savvy styling to her company’s growth from a home business to global empire. Tickets are still available but places are limited. You can book your spot here.

How would you describe your design style?
Eclectic, colourful yet definitely not over styled.

What is your go-to colour combination?
It changes constantly – at the moment a combination of Marsala and Japanese Blue.

Any trends making a resurgence in textiles this year?
Over the past couple of years we have been very focused on what I call technical fabrics for the commercial market. This year, we have the residential market in mind with a greater focus on natural fibres, especially linen. These will be released in a wide selection of tonal options with an emphasis on softer colours.

How often do you refresh and update your scatter cushions at home?
I would like to twice a year but am more likely to do it once a year!

Which wallpaper collection is a favourite of yours right now?
One that is yet to be released – from the BLUME archive by Signature Prints. The hero design within this collection is called Poppy. It comes in three scales but I adore an oversized one. I can’t wait to start using it, and it’s incredible as a fabric too.

Is 2015 about the feature wall or is wallpaper best applied throughout an entire room?
The entire room! It looks much more balanced aesthetically than a feature wall.

What’s next for Signature Prints?
We have just begun our ‘re-energise’ program which will see lots of changes in store for Signature Prints over the next three years. We are always evolving, driven by our creative hunger. We are excited to expand into new avenues and connect with the creative community on a much larger scale. This will include our very own festival in March to celebrate the opening of a previously unseen archive. Watch this space!
