Independent hardware chain’s are not easy to come by these days. Hardware retailing has been ‘Bunnified’ with Bunning’s just being so easy, cheap and let’s face it, addictive. So it was no surprise when my local independent Hardware store across the road packed up a little over a month ago.
Luckily dynamic Duo Hamish Watts and Ben Carroll took their years of hospitality experience and changed it into one of Bondi’s coolest new bars – ‘Bondi Hardware’. Rumour has it that the name IP was purchased over a latte at the cafe across the road for a couple of hundred bucks, a stroke of genius, as it gives the bar ‘instant brand’ and provides a talking point when describing the cafe/bar to friends.
And people are talking, and visiting. Not only does it have the best service in Bondi and a great menu (especially the cocktails!) but the interior is rough and raw and reminiscent of the Hardware store once there. Exposed sawn timber, chalk boards and raw brick add character yet the space is open and breezy with sky lights and a good view at the passers by. The indoor greenery is as fresh as the staff and I love seeing all the vintage tools in the back corridor.
The menu is done by head chef – Justine Walshe (formerly La Grillade) and is constructed with a ‘global share style food’ ethos designed to give a more casual back drop to the extensive bar book – including niche brew’s such as Batlow Cider and Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum.
This places is casual, cool and easy – just what I needed as my new ‘local’.
