A Clear Design Direction

Lucite, often coined acrylic in Australia, is such a luxurious finish to use within the home. First introduced to the marketplace in the 1920’s (believe it or not!), the beauty this material brings to a room is a timeless luxury.

In the furniture making process, it is traditionally a very difficult material to work with. And whilst the price may reflect this, it is well loved by designers for its strength and glass-like translucent qualities that can turn an ordinary piece into something extraordinary. It also helps that it weighs around half that of glass.

Versatility is one of lucite’s best features, as it can easily be incorporated into any home – from classic styles through to contemporary. Max Sparrow’s is a perfect amalgamation of traditional and modern; a Louis-style warm grey velvet seat and back meets lucite cabriole legs, merging the two elements in one elegant silhouette that can be sure to beautifully complement your home.

Another fantastic feature of the opulent material is the translucency that, when placed in a room, creates the illusion of more space as light filters through, making it the perfect material if you’re restricted by dimensions.

The beautiful Jacques collection by Jonathan Adler maximises the use of the luminous material, and tops it off with delicate brushed brass corner pieces, creating an almost ghost-like appearance that is broken up by the subtle sparkle of the brass. Use these pieces over a rich, bold rug or contrast it against a dark and dramatic sofa.

If you’d rather a more subtle incorporation of lucite in the home then try a lucite tray, which can be used for coffee table books, candles, and ornaments – it’s the perfect layering element!
